Balahari and his Swargarath (hearse or funeral van) are the central characters of our series. For Balahari, a man in his mid-fifties, the greatest struggle in life is to provide for his family — his wife, Manasi, and two sons, Monta and Ghanta. A driver by profession, Balahari lost his job during the lockdown. After several failed attempts to earn a living, he realizes that driving is the only work he truly knows. After selling his wife’s jewellery, he went to the city in search of fortune and ended up buying a third-hand hearse (funeral van). When he brings the vehicle, the first ever in his village, it sparks a storm of reactions. The villagers split into two groups; one believes the hearse (funeral van) is a bad omen that will bring misfortune, while others see it as a sign of progress and change. Balahari’s struggle with his Swargarath (hearse or funeral van) forms the heart of this story — a blend of humour, emotion, and the raw realities of life in a small village.
